Collection: 40 Amp Circuit Breakers

40 amp breakers are usually double-pole breakers for 240 volt equipment such as electric ranges and cooktops, air conditioners and other large appliances. We stock standard and GFCI 40 amp breakers from Square D, Siemens, Eaton and GE.

40 amp breaker guide

Sizing

Use the breaker size on the appliance's nameplate or installation instructions, and make sure the circuit's wire is rated for it. Never fit a bigger breaker than the wire allows. More in circuit breaker sizes explained.

Double-pole

A double-pole breaker takes two spaces and disconnects both 120 volt legs of a 240 volt circuit at once.

GFCI

Some 240 volt equipment, such as spas and some outdoor equipment, needs GFCI protection. See our GFCI breakers. Which NEC edition applies depends on your state or city, and your local inspector has the final say.

Match the breaker to your panel

A breaker only fits the load centers it's listed for, so check the label inside your panel door, then shop by brand: Square D QO, Square D Homeline, Siemens, Eaton Cutler-Hammer or GE Q-Line.

Installation

Breakers are installed inside a live electrical panel. Have a licensed electrician do the work.
