Wire size

A 15 amp circuit in a home is usually wired with 14 AWG copper, and NEC section 240.4(D) limits 14 AWG copper to 15 amp protection. Replace a 15 amp breaker with another 15 amp breaker of the same type.

Standard, AFCI, GFCI or dual function?

Many 15 amp circuits in living areas and bedrooms need AFCI protection, and circuits in bathrooms, garages and outdoors need GFCI protection. Which NEC edition applies depends on your state or city, and your local inspector has the final say. Shop AFCI, GFCI or dual function breakers.

Match the breaker to your panel

A breaker only fits the load centers it's listed for, so check the label inside your panel door, then shop by brand: Square D QO, Square D Homeline, Siemens, Eaton Cutler-Hammer or GE Q-Line.

FAQ

Can I replace a 15 amp breaker with a 20 amp breaker?

Only if the whole circuit is wired for 20 amps (12 AWG copper or larger). A 20 amp breaker on 14 AWG wire lets the wire carry more current than it's rated for, which is a fire hazard and against code. More in circuit breaker sizes explained.

Are 15 amp breakers single-pole or double-pole?

Most are single-pole for 120 volt circuits; double-pole 15 amp breakers serve 240 volt loads rated for a 15 amp circuit.
